How can I go to Manali from Leh by bus?

  • There are two different type of bus service
  • HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) The HRTC bus service are the ordinary buses that ply in the region for locals to commute. As compared to HPTDC luxury bus, these are way cheaper and a great way to journey if you are traveling to Ladakh on a budget. From Leh, you will first board a bus from Leh which starts early in the morning at 5 AM. This bus travels all day and reaches Keylong by late evening where you will have to look for your own accommodation. The cost of your stay here is not included in the ticket. From Keylong Bus stand, you will next day buy a ticket for Keylong to Manali Bus
  • HPTDC (Himachal Pradesh Tourist Development Corporation):- This one is an all luxury bus that starts towards late June to early July after Manali Leh highway has been declared safe by authorities for a bus to travel. This bus remains operational until September 15th after which it is suspended until next year. This bus starts from Leh bus stand early in the morning and reaches Keylong by late evening. The next day it starts from Keylong at 6 AM and reaches Manali by afternoon.

What are the documents required for a Leh trip?

If you are planing to visit to Leh Ladakh you have to complete a process of documentation and permit at various places like Rohtang Pass permit to go to Leh Ladakh whether you are traveling with cab or having a Leh Ladakh bike trip.

Inner Line Permit is an official travel document issued by the government of India to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected/restricted area for a limited period. It is obligatory for Indian citizens from outside those States to obtain permit for entering into the protected State. Earlier for Indian Nationals Inner line permits were not required. But now  because of heavy traffic in leh Ladakh tour, it has become necessary to take Environment Fees of Rs 400 and Inner Line Permits will again be required in Ladakh for Indian Tourists / Nationals with the effect from April 2017. All Indian Nationals and foreign Tourists will need to pay environmental fees.

While you are visiting to the beautiful places of Ladakh not all the places require the Inner Line Permit but it is always good to be a bit more cautious.  One can get the Inner Line Permit application form easily from the stationary shop behind the Leh DC office.  The office is open from 9.00 AM to 03:00 PM and all your applications will be accepted in between these hours only.  Once all your documents are approved carry copies of your Inner Line Permits with you as there are chances that you might have to submit them at check posts of the military personnel. Self attested photocopies of valid nationality proof, Photo-IDs are necessary to procure Inner Line Permits. Besides permit application form, you need to write a request application letter addressing DC of Leh – Ladakh district for the approval of your permits for Leh Ladakh tour. In the application, you need to express your interest to visit the places you wish to travel along with the dates you would be visiting these places in your Leh trip. The validity of the inner line permits are 3 weeks for Indians and 1 week for foreigners. However, there is no limit on the number of times you enter a place in the valid period provided you have the permits with you for that place. In order to get the permits for Hanle and Changthang or to go to Tso Moriri via Chusul – Nyoma route from Pangong Tso you need to mention all places enroute so that you are not sent back from any post. These places are: Man – Merak – Chusul – Tsaga – Loma – Nyoma and hanle.

How to Get Inner Line Permit for Leh-Ladakh?

Both for Indian Nationals as well as Foreign Nationals there are permits which are required to produce during your road trip to Leh and Ladakh. The Inner line Permits Fees will be different for foreign Nationals. Inner line permits in Leh – Ladakh region is required in order to visit the restricted places like: Dah,Hanu Villages, Pangong Tso, Man, Merak, Tso Moriri, Nyoma, Loma Bend, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Tyakshi, Hanle, Digger La, Tangyar (for trekking only).

Inner Line Permits are not required for Zanskar and Suru Valley. No permits are required to visit the local places near Leh town or Leh local sightseeing, places on Srinagar Leh Highway and places on Manali – Leh Highway and Rohtang pass permit is not required when you are coming back from Leh to Manali.

Hotels are classified into A, B,C and D/economy categories while guest houses are divided into upper, medium and economy class. Tariff for A category hotels generally include all meals, offering a choice or combination of Continental, Chinese and Indian cuisine, with one or two local fares thrown in for variety. Stay in a guest house in Leh is a less formal accommodation, offering rooms in a part of the residential house or its annexe, where the guests can share the host family’s kitchen and living room for meals. Apart from the reasonably low tariff offered for accommodation ranging from very good to merely basic, the guest house system also provides an opportunity for the tourists to see and experience the typical Ladakhi life from the inside and can be familiar with the local ladakhi cousins.
